“Impersonation is taking on the character / role of another person; it’s about mastering their idiosyncrasies and having the ability to transform into their skin. It’s about understanding and believing that you are that person whilst you are on stage. Impersonation is more about being a triple threat – you need to sing, you need to dance and you need to act, sometimes all 3 simultaneously”…… Peter Harrington –Olsen
Peter Harrington-Olsen has been perfecting his impersonation of iconic superstar Michael Jackson since the tender age of 7, turning his adoration of one of the world’s most famous entertainers into a burgeoning career path that is and continues to gain attention and critical acclaim across the country. Harrington-Olsen is a multi-talented and multi-skilled performer, having solidified his dancing chops with Melbourne’s ‘Dirty Laundry’ from 2004 to 2011, where he was able to showcase his vast array of talents on and off stage, ranging from song writing, production and sequencing. His collaborative efforts with this troupe lead them to the Top 20 on The Australian Dance ARIA charts, with 6 of their pop hits, penned by Harrington-Olsen.
Falling in love with Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’ music video from a young boy, Harrington-Olsen tried to imitate Michael Jackson in every way – from his infamous Moonwalk step to his captivating vocals and spellbinding dance moves, as he says, “ Michael was really something special to me. He was a magician, he was a space man, and at times he was an alien. He was always reinventing himself and taking things to different heights. He pushed boundaries on what could and couldn’t be done mentally, physically and spiritually – almost God –like in stature”. It is with that reference to the icon that Harrington-Olsen pushes his own performance boundaries and dares to give his audience more than just a mere impersonation show. As a choreographer, Peter has created quite an impressive list of corporate and celebrity clients which include; Kylie & Dannii Minogue, Tina Arena , Deni Hines, Sophie Monk, Toni Pearen, Jimmy Barnes, Jessica Mauboy, Macy Gray , BMW, British Airways, The Edelstein’s Wedding Winter Wonderland Show and a myriad of others. “ The greatest rewards for me personally, comes from the gratitude, respect the recognition for doing something good. The fact that I may have the ability / power in performance to take people’s problems away for just one minute satisfies me to no end”, says Peter on what his personal motivations are in life. “ Keeping fit and healthy, being positive promotes a strong state of mind and allows me to strive for perfection within and outside of my craft”. Peter’s choreography experience has been vast given that he has worked alongside the likes of some of the Australia’s best including Kelly Abbey, Alana Scanlan, Tony Bartuccio, the late Ross Coleman, Jason Coleman and William A Forsyth.
To watch Peter in Michael Jackson character is a sight to behold. His precision in movement and performance is second to none, his energy and perfection of everything from music choice to synchronized step moves in conjunction with that of The King of Pop himself. As Peter himself f explains of Jackson’s inspiration, “ his perfection, his execution and how he applied that to most aspects of his life. His precision and professionalism is at a level that is uniquely his. I also respect the fact that he gave back to the world, the poor, the unfortunate and sick. He encapsulated 100% of his passions, love and dreams creating him to be the iconic performer that he was and always will be”.
Peter Harrington-Olsen is the quintessential performer of today’s creative times. With a successful resume that boasts singing, dancing, acting, modelling and production to name a few, he is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with on the global scale. It is easy to see that Peter loves and feels privileged to do what he does and that translates in every performance he engages his audiences in. If he feels it – they will feel it to. One wonders what Michael Jackson would say to Peter if he could about his impressionistic works ? Peter feels it may go a little something like this, “ I have re-occurring dreams about Michael Jackson knocking on my door step of my very first home as a child. He enters , music goes on, we dance ….song finishes and the conclusion is the same every time… he looks at me and smiles that Michael Jackson smile, nods and says ‘ Good job man, nice moves’…That’s what I think he will say to me, well at least I hope so”. Let’s just say Michael Jackson would be beyond impressed with Peter Harrington-Olsen!
